FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be religious or spiritual to join?

No, you don’t need a particular religious belief – but openness helps. We create space for personal silence, reflection, and conversations about what really matters in life. Everyone is welcome.

I am a Christian (Protestant), and this is reflected in the prayers and occasionally in the themes or resources I share. However, many participants are not Christian, and I respect that. I also draw on texts and insights from other religions, spiritual traditions and philosophies – they enrich our journey.

Let the participants speak:

“Really enjoyed the experience and particularly the fact that there was a faith component. It felt very special to begin the hike with a prayer and to have a moment to reflect in silence.”

“Since I’m not religious I was a little sceptical about the word ‘pilgrimage’ but honestly it was less about God and his superpowers and more about self-reflection.”

How fit do I need to be?

You should be able to walk 15 to 20 kilometres at a moderate pace. We take regular breaks and adjust the tempo to the group. It’s not about performance – it’s about being on the way.

What should I bring?

Less is more! Comfortable walking shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, a small backpack with water and food for the day, as we usually don’t stop at shops or cafés. Sometimes, swimwear and a towel, and sun protection.

If you have a pilgrim passport or a notebook, feel free to bring it – we may come across a place to get a pilgrim stamp.

What happens along the way? Is there a fixed programme?

We start together, get to know each other, and begin the hike. There are breaks, including moments for spiritual or mindful reflections, time for conversations, and periods of silent walking. We arrive at our destination together and say farewell. The route is roughly planned, but we are always invited to shape the journey together.

Some impressions from participants:

“Pilgrims today were from different cultural backgrounds and nationalities; I could learn things that I did not know before from the conversations throughout the pleasant walk.”

“I was really thankful for the question that we were challenged to answer during the silent part of the walk.”

“It was a good opportunity to reflect and think of myself – why I react in certain way to certain situations. I also managed to slow down during the silence part.”

“I’ve been feeling a bit down so this was the perfect opportunity to reconnect with myself and my higher mission and remind me to just keep pushing forward.”

Can I come on my own without knowing anyone?

Absolutely. Many come on their own – and find new connections along the way. The group often grows together quickly.

How much does the pilgrimage cost?

One-day pilgrimage hikes are free of charge, but you’ll need to organise your own travel and food, which might involve some cost for you.

For multi-day or special pilgrimages, there may be costs for preparation, organisation, accommodation, and meals. These will be clearly communicated in advance.

What if the weather is bad?

Pilgrimage takes place in almost any weather – with the right clothing, most conditions are manageable. Only in cases of severe weather or safety concerns (e.g. storm warnings), we’ll cancel or postpone. Your safety always comes first.

What are the Berlin Pilgrims – and do I need the WhatsApp community?

The Berlin Pilgrims is an international, interfaith hiking community for Berliners. We walk together, get to know each other, explore nature, and take a break from everyday life.

We organise everything via a free WhatsApp community: There you’ll get updates on upcoming hikes and find a dedicated group chat for each walk – to register, ask questions, connect with other pilgrims, and stay in touch before, during and after the journey.

Want to join? Please contact me directly.

But don’t worry – all pilgrimage hikes also work without joining the WhatsApp group. You’ll still have the same experience and are just as welcome.
